Choosing a Filter

The Importance and Function of the Filter

To prepare you to choose the perfect filter, let's start with explaining the job of the filter in your pool. The filter and pump are the heart and lungs of the pool circulation and filtration system. The primary purpose of the filter is to keep your pool clean by removing undissolved debris from the pool water.

How the Filter Works

Pool water comes from the circulation pump into the filter where small debris particles are removed through depth or surface filtration, and then goes on to the heater or back to the pool.

A filter works through mechanical separation of water and debris through surface or depth filtration. Sand filters use special filter sand, cartridge filters pass water through a fibrous element, and DE filters pass water through a thin layer of diatomaceous earth that is coated onto a grid.

A gauge located on the filter or valve can be used to measure the back pressure or resistance in your filter system. When the pressure increases by 10 psi, the filter should be cleaned to reduce resistance and improve water flow.

Cartridge filters require disassembly and cleaning of the cartridge periodically to remove debris from the filter.

DE and Sand filters require periodic backwashing to remove debris from the filter. To accomplish this water is directed through the pool filter by a valve (multiport, vertical, or other). Once the water runs through the filter, it flows to the pool heater or back into the pool. To backwash, the valve is manipulated to reverse flow and direct debris-filled water to waste.

  • Minimal maintenance,
  • Best water clarity,
  • Superior efficiency, and more.

Diatomaceous Earth (DE) filters

Diatomaceous Earth (DE) filters

Diatomaceous Earth (DE) filters offer the best filtration with efficient flow and large cleaning capacities. Available in sizes ranging from 27 to 72 square feet of filtration area, Hayward offers a full line of DE filters suiting the needs of any residential pool. DE filters rely on the addition of Diatomaceous Earth in powder form to achieve their remarkable filtration performance.

Cartridge filters

Cartridge filters

Cartridge filters offer excellent filtration, long cleaning cycles and the utmost in energy efficiency and water conservation. Available in sizes from 75 to 700 square feet of filtration area, Hayward offers a cartridge filter for any pool. Cartridge filters do not require backwashing, allowing for water savings of up to 92% - this equates to 2,500 gallons or 60 loads of laundry! The elimination of a backwash valve minimizes restriction resulting in less demand on the pump and lower energy consumption.

Sand filters

Sand filters

Sand filters provide good filtration with minimal interaction and maintenance. Available in sizes ranging from 22" to 36", Hayward offers a sand filter meeting the needs of any residential pool.

Filter Maintenance

DE

When it's time for cleaning, a simple backwash is followed by the addition of DE through the skimmer. Disassembly of the filter is not required during the standard cleaning process.

Cartridge

Cartridge filters do not require backwashing, allowing for water savings of up to 92% - this equates to 2,500 gallons or 60 loads of laundry! The elimination of a backwash valve minimizes restriction resulting in less demand on the pump and lower energy consumption. When it's time for cleaning, simply remove the cartridge(s) and rinse with a hose.

Sand

To clean the filter, a simple backwash is completed removing debris from the sand bed. Typically, sand filters only require disassembly every 5-7 years. Minimal disassembly and no requirement for supplemental media make sand filtration one of the least expensive filtration modes over the life of the filter. Sand filters are available with top mount multiport valves as well as side mount multiport or slide valves.
