Electrical Engineering Intern

It designs and markets the Totally Hayward® System, a complete line of state-of-the-art, energy efficient residential pool equipment including pumps, filters, heaters, heat pumps, cleaners, electronic control systems, electronic chlorinators, lighting, safety equipment, Hayward Flow Control products, industrial flow control valves and components, and white goods such as skimmers, main drains and other thermoplastic pool construction fittings. The Electrical and Electronics Engineering Intern will be responsible for the design, development, modification and implementation of analog, digital and power circuits, and for the documentation required for a product to be released to production. These products are used for the residential swimming pool marketplace.

Major Tasks and Responsibilities:

  • Create and update key documentation for existing and new products such as specifications, drawings, schematics, flow charts, block diagrams and PCB layout for multi-layer and routing of analog and digital signals.
  • Perform circuit analysis using Pspice and other tools and verify the simulation by testing the actual circuits in a laboratory environment.
  • Perform lab “hands on” testing and collect measurements, analyze the data in detail to determine the product performance and reliability using various instruments. This could include environmental testing, EMC testing, or ESD testing.
  • Participate in product design reviews, dFMEAs, Team Problem Solving, and other design activities.
  • Build prototype circuits and test and analyze component stress to ensure reliable operation of the circuits.
  • Research new and existing electronic parts, power circuits and power switching devices for various power electronic topologies.
  • Verify tolerances and specifications for both new parts and new sources for existing parts such as power devices, capacitors, diodes, transformers, filtering devices etc.
  • Create and maintain prototype and test fixture BOMs (Bills of Material) as spread sheets. Assist in formal creation / modification of formal BOMs in our MRP system.
  • Determine the cost for all components within a BOM.
  • Verify and check BOMs against build files.
  • Evaluate the design and recommend product improvements including design changes / part changes to improve either functionality or the cost structure as an integral part of a design team.
  • Create specifications and drawings for electro-mechanical parts based on analysis or test results.
  • Provide support to manufacturing for released products that may need engineering changes.

Goals and Learning Experiences:
Throughout this internship, the candidate will be immersed within a professional electronics / power electronics design and development organization. Over time he / she will experience every phase of the design cycle from design to prototyping to verification to release for high volume production. The student’s responsibilities shall increase as he/she progresses through college curriculum. This will include but is not limited to:

  • Exposure to making electrical measurements using various meters, oscilloscopes, and spectrum analyzers.
  • Learn and use engineering problem solving techniques that are standard in the electronics industry.


  • Pursuing bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Power or Controls.
  • Familiarity with MS Office programs especially Word, Excel, Visio, and Power Point.
  • Familiarity with common mobile devices such as iPads and tablets.
  • Familiarity with various WEB browsers.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Minimum of 20 hours per week needed. Full time available / preferred during the summer months.
